Review:
In case you haven’t heard of the film studio and distributor The Asylum, let me explain to you what they do. They create so called mockbusters, a form of low budget movies that has almost the same name like current blockbuster movies. And while low budget production don’t have to be bad, these movies usually are. Latest creations are Apocalypse Pompeii – we all know the movie Pompeii starts this Friday in the U.S. – and Android Cop, the Asylum version of Robocop. It still doesn’t make any sense to me that this production company manages to make a profit. I have the suspicion that people might watch these gems for the same reasons I do: Hoping they eventually land one decent movie. But I have to admit I can’t find any redeeming quality in them.
Jailbait starts off by showing a girl playing the violin. When her stepfather is trying to rape her she pushes him off her, which causes him to hit his head and die. She then gets sentenced for four years in jail. The judge looks like she came from a porn shot in Malibu, where plastic babes are a must – The funny thing is Tammy Klein, who is playing the judge doesn’t look plastic at all in real life. And that is basically hinting on where the plot is going: It turns into a torture porn/ borderline soft porn. Boobs Boobs Boobs. I haven’t read the graphic novel it is based on, but the plot is definitely overshadowed by all the Lesbian sex, rape and violence. There isn’t any character development or real story to identify. And the worst part is the tagline: “In the Vein of Orange is The New Black”. It has nothing to do with this brilliant TV-Show. But this is another proof that without any reference to another good movie or TV-Show The Asylum wouldn’t be able to sell one single copy of their work.
But I don’t want to be too mean, because I don’t like being a negative critic. The raw and dull image treatment The Asylum is know for works perfectly for this movie, because it gives it the edge and dark atmosphere that it is trying to pursue. Sarah Malakul Lane isn’t a bad lead actress at all. She is fighting her way through the horrible script and therefore convinces in my opinion. And even the other actors are doing a good job. Also, while half of the movie doesn’t seem to go anywhere and comes off very unrealistic, there is at least an ending that makes sense.
So is Jailbait a good movie? A gosh no. But the actors are somewhat making up for the horrible storyline and script. Would I watch it again? Of course not, but I think there could be an audience for it. After all, I watched it, too. And let’s be honest: there have been plenty of trashy and stupid movie that have become cult classics.
So my final verdict: If you like prison movies in general you might like this one, too. But if you just want to see it for the nudity aspect, grab a porn, because all the rape and violence might distract you a lot. Nonetheless I think this is one of the better movies The Asylum has brought out, so maybe they can look into a brighter future with better movies of higher quality.
