Long Story Short:
A teenage boy has to go on a vacation with his mother and her new boyfriend and his daughter. Feeling neglected by his mother, who seems to still trying to find herself, he starts working at a public pool and befriends the owner, who shows more interest in him than his mother or her boyfriend.
Review:
I think it is hard to find a movie starring Toni Collette that is actually bad, and The Way Way Back doesn’t suck either. I would even take it a step further and call it one of the best coming-of-age movies that has been released within the last few years. The actors show a lot of commitment and it isn’t hard to relate the main characters. The emotional gap that grew between mother and son is almost unbearable to watch because one wants them to succeed with each other.
The mother’s boyfriend, nicely played by Steve Carell, seems to be totally detached from any reality, and so is his shallow daughter who seems to care about no one but herself.
Finally, Sam Rockwell who played “Wild Bill” in The Green Mile, convinced me that he can be a nice person. For almost fifteen years I hated him for what he had done to John Coffey, but in The Way Way Back he got a role that made me like him a lot.
The storyline is simple yet intriguing. There is no unnecessary subplot and every minute is pure enjoyment. No overly dramatic moments, just an awkward teenager and his insecure mother growing up.
It’s definitely worth a watch!!
