Golden Girls VS. Golden Sisters
There is a new Reality Show on OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network), and I have been reading tweets like “Golden Girls step aside, The Golden Sisters are so much funnier” or “The Golden Girls can finally retire, we have found the new generation”. Since The Golden Girls mean everything to me, I was curious and checked out the first episode of this highly praised Reality Show.
The two shows in direct comparison:
The Storylines:
The Golden Girls:
Blanche (Rue McClanahan) and her roommates Rose (Betty White), Dorothy (Bea Arthur) and Dorothy’s mother Sophia (Estelle Getty) are either widowed or divorced. While Blanche is having one sexual adventure after the other, Dorothy is looking for a soul mate after she has been living with the wrong man for the wrong reasons for 38 years. Rose, who is the “blond” and gullible one of the group, sees everything in a very positive way and tries to always keep the quartet together. Sophia completes the group and is always ready to give advice to one of her girls, but doesn’t hesitate to shoot out one of her snappy and straight- forward comments at any moment she gets.
Golden Sisters:
Three sisters in their 70s and 80s are discussing pop culture and trends. Everything started when a Youtube video of them watching the infamous Kim Kardashian reality porn went viral. Mary, the oldest sisters who is 83 years old, owns a salon and tries to attract a new crowd of customers, while the twins Josie and Teresa try to give her advice. One moment they love each other, talk about fashion trends and celebrities, the next they hate and curse at each other. A traditional Italian family? I am not sure if they live in the same house, but they seem to be together most of the time.
Review:
The Golden Girls aired for 7 seasons and would have been on TV even longer if Bea Arthur hadn’t decided to leave the show. It addressed taboo topics such as teen pregnancy, homosexuality, having sex at a high age, emancipation, euthanasia, cheating husbands and many more. The show was smart and funny, and each character had its own story and charm, which made it easy to fall in love with all of them.
The Golden Sisters are snappy, catty and curse a lot, which is supposed to come off as funny, but to be honest it seems more ridiculous and forced than anything else to me. And even though it is a Reality Show it seems staged rather than funny or charming.
Only because Betty White gets away with it, doesn’t mean any other older person can do it. Another thing I noticed is that they claim to have millions of fans on twitter and Youtube, and they even show a number that reaches over 3,000,000, however. If you look at Twitter they only have about 20,000 followers – which is still impressive – and the most watched video of them on Youtube has less than 500,000 clicks, which is, again, still impressive. But where are the 3,000,000 fans are supposed to come from? Is this supposed to be a clever marketing strategy? They seem to be nice and sweet ladies but I don’t need to see them on TV.
If you want to see real comedy, which is true and honest, stick with the original and watch The Golden Girls.
