“Barbenheimer” – Who is the Winner?

Last weekend, the two most anticipated movies of the year started screening at all major cinemas. And I was excited to be a part of it. Both of the showtimes we visited were sold out, and it felt like the good old pre-pandemic times.

We went to see Oppenheimer at 10 am and Barbie at 10pm, which was a good idea since Oppenheimer – whether you like it or not – sticks with you.

Oppenheimer is a deep and dark journey into the psyche of Robert Oppenheimer, the inventor of the atomic bomb. It is a long movie, but I have to admit it went by fast, mostly because it challenges our thoughts the entire movie. While the cinematography, soundtrack and entire cast were brilliant, there were many flaws in my oppinion, and I kept wondering, “Would this movie receive so much praise and attention if it wasn’t made by the great Christopher Nolan?”

I personally think Nolan always delivers an amazing cinematography, but his storylines can be confusing because of time jumps or weird cuts, as it was the case here. The dialgues were fast-paced, but sometimes they felt too long, and the cuts were too abrupt. Furthermore, the sound was really bad, sometimes the music was so loud that it was hard to even hear what the actors said. On top of that, it was just really loud to the point where people had to cover their ears. That being said, the movie had its effect on me, and I think it should be shown in any Art of Cinema class, preferably with subtitles.

Barbie is obviously a much easier movie to digest. Judging by the trailer I honestly didn’t expect much, but decided to watch it anyways, especially since I knew we would feel some type of way after Oppenheimer, and would need something light-hearted; and as it turned out, it was really needed.

Barbie is a fun watch, and the almost 2 hours of running time went by fast. The cast was perfect, and it looked like everyone involved had a blast being part of the movie.

At times, it was fun and sometimes even a little ridiculous, which made it even more fun. It gave a glimpse into the world of the new generation, and how they absorb the things around them, which can give us hope for a better future but also scare us because everything has to be so politically correct these days.

It showed that even though we have made progress in the women’s world, we still have a long way to go until we reach total equality, not only for women but also for groups that are still being neglected.

Towards the end, it became a little too preachy for me and didn’t make much sense, which was a small letdown after having such a strong beginning and middle part.

Nonetheless, it was super fun and light-hearted, and it is definitely a must-see movie of this summer.

It’s definitely worth watching both movies, and if you are trying to have a Barbenheimer Day, start with Oppenheimer, so you have a more pleasant ending of your day.
